Introduction to Shiatsu
What is Shiatsu?
“The heart of Shiatsu is like pure maternal love. Pressure on the body stimulates the body's self-healing power.”
— Tokujiro Namikoshi, Founder of Modern Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a form of Japanese bodywork that blends ancient healing traditions with modern techniques to support both physical and emotional well-being. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Shiatsu uses firm yet gentle pressure on specific acupressure points to promote the natural flow of energy (Qi or Ki) through the body's meridians.
The word "Shiatsu" (指圧) means "finger pressure." Practitioners apply pressure using fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows, or knees. Unlike other massage styles, Shiatsu is done fully clothed and typically on a futon or mat.
🌸 The Roots of Shiatsu
Shiatsu evolved in early 20th-century Japan, influenced by TCM, Anma (Japanese massage), and acupuncture. Tokujiro Namikoshi emphasized anatomical knowledge and energy work, eventually earning recognition from Japan’s Ministry of Health.
Zen Shiatsu, developed by Shizuto Masunaga, highlights the mind-body connection and incorporates meridian theory with psychological awareness. Today, Shiatsu is practiced worldwide to encourage harmony between mind, body, and spirit.

How Shiatsu Supports Both Physical and Emotional Well-being
Shiatsu stimulates the body's healing through finger pressure, stretches, and joint mobilization based on the flow of qi through meridians.
Physical Well-being

- Improves Circulation: Stimulates blood flow and lymph drainage to support detox and oxygen delivery.
- Relieves Muscle Tension and Pain: Eases chronic issues like back and neck pain through targeted pressure.
- Supports Digestion: Abdominal pressure can relieve bloating and stimulate gut function.
- Boosts Immunity: Enhances natural defenses by promoting relaxation and circulation.
- Balances the Nervous System: Activates the parasympathetic nervous system to promote healing and reduce inflammation.
Emotional and Mental Well-being
- Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Rhythmic pressure lowers cortisol and encourages calm.
- Balances Emotions: Works with meridians related to organs linked to emotions (e.g., liver for anger, lungs for grief).
- Improves Sleep: Helps regulate sleep patterns and ease insomnia.
- Enhances Mind-Body Connection: Encourages awareness, mindfulness, and emotional regulation.
- Promotes Safety and Comfort: Gentle touch supports nervous system balance, aiding those with trauma or stress.
How Shiatsu Addresses Specific Emotional States Like Anxiety and Grief
Anxiety
- Associated Organs: Heart, Kidney, Spleen
- Heart Meridian: Calms an overactive mind (Shen) using pressure on the chest and arms.
- Kidney Meridian: Grounds fear and panic by stimulating the back and legs.
- Spleen Meridian: Reduces overthinking by focusing on the abdomen and legs.
Techniques Used:
- Slow, grounding pressure
- Gentle abdominal work
- Breath-focused touch to calm the nervous system
Grief
- Associated Organ: Lungs
- Lung Meridian: Treats unprocessed grief manifesting as shallow breathing or fatigue through chest and arm work.
Techniques Used:
- Opening the chest and shoulders
- Encouraging deep breathing
- Creating a safe, nurturing environment
The Emotional Layer of Shiatsu: Shiatsu treats the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. Practitioners use intuitive touch to rebalance energy, often bringing emotional relief without the need for verbal expression. Many clients leave sessions feeling lighter and more centered.
